La novela “El arriero de Tarapacá” narra una historia acontecida en el siglo XIX, en parte sobre sobre territorios que entonces fueron del sur del Perú: Tarapacá y Arica; y es también una historia de filiación de su protagonista con la tierra donde nació. Manuel Rodríguez vio la luz en Camiña, sobre las serranías de Pisagua. Hijo de Isaías y nieto de Ferrán, un judío sefardita cristianizado que fue a parar por esos lares. Manuel, como su padre, eran arrieros en las rutas de comercio que conectaban a las costas del Pacífico del sur peruano.
