What The River Gives
Glen Hatcher (Author) · Glen Hatcher · Paperback
In 1920, a premature baby named Eileen Clark is carried home through Whanganui in a shoebox, so small her parents are unsure whether she will survive the night.
She does.
Eileen grows up beside the Whanganui River in a family shaped by hard work, laughter and the unstoppable optimism of her father, Pat Clark.
Pat is a butcher, river trader and natural storyteller, welcomed at landings throughout the district. He believes almost anything can be put right with enough effort, goodwill and one more chance.
His wife, Rose, has spent years making sure his optimism does not outrun the household accounts.
As the 1920s give way to the Depression years, roads begin changing the old river communities and the Clark family struggles towards a long held dream of a business and home of their own. Rose quietly builds an independent trade. Eileen discovers a talent for shop work and begins imagining a life beyond Whanganui. Her younger sister Gwen notices everything the adults would rather leave unsaid.
Then Pat makes a decision that changes the family.
What follows is not simply a story of mistakes and consequences, but of love after disappointment, trust that cannot be repaired by promises alone, and children growing old enough to see their parents as complicated human beings.
Set in New Zealand between 1920 and 1938, What the River Gives is a sweeping historical family saga about fathers and daughters, marriage, community, responsibility and the courage required to let the people we love choose lives of their own.
Inspired in part by Glen Hatcher’s own family history, it follows one ordinary New Zealand family across a generation, from a premature baby carried home in a shoebox to a young woman stepping aboard a train towards a future that finally belongs to her.
