She was born in Skopje, currently Macedonia, in 1910. In 1928, she joined the Order of the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin, from where she was sent to India to begin her novitiate. There, she dedicated herself to teaching until 1948, when she left the order to found the Missionaries of Charity. With the help of people who were part of her congregation, her effort to help the poorest spread worldwide. She received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. After her death in 1997, the canonization process began and she was beatified in 2003.
