Synopsis "The Tale of Genji (Everyman's Library Classics & Contemporary Classics) "

In the early eleventh century Murasaki Shikibu, a lady in the Heian court of Japan, wrote what many consider to be the world’s first novel, more than three centuries before Chaucer. The Heian era (794—1185) is recognized as one of the very greatest periods in Japanese literature, and The Tale of Genji is not only the unquestioned prose masterpiece of that period but also the most lively and absorbing account we have of the intricate, exquisite, highly ordered court culture that made such a masterpiece possible. Genji is the favorite son of the emperor but also a man of dangerously passionate impulses. In his highly refined world, where every dalliance is an act of political consequence, his shifting alliances and secret love affairs create great turmoil and very nearly destroy him. Edward Seidensticker’s translation of Lady Murasaki’s splendid romance has been honored throughout the English-speaking world for its fluency, scholarly depth, and deep literary tact and sensitivity. Although her immense talent was recognized in her time, very little is known about the writer's life. She may have been born in 975, she may have died in 1014. Not even her real name is known. It is known that she was the daughter of a scholar, though a poet without talent, passionate about literature, who taught his daughter the Chinese language and its classics, but also passed on to her the love for the literature of her ancestors.

They say her father regretted that such a smart girl had not been born a boy to continue the literary prestige of the family. However, he took his young daughter with him on a long journey through the Empire. It is known that at the age of twenty-nine, Murasaki lived at the Court as a lady-in-waiting to the intelligent Empress Akiko. Between the year 1008 and the year 1010 she wrote her diary, perhaps simultaneously to the composition of The Tale of Genji.
