Synopsis "The Science of Microplastics (The Science of Everything)"

There was a time when garbage had the decency to look like garbage. A broken bottle looked broken, an old tire looked old, and a discarded sandwich wrapper was usually easy to identify because it was lying three feet from a perfectly good trash can. Pollution was visible, tangible, and generally rude enough to announce itself. Then humanity improved things. We invented materials that were lighter, stronger, cheaper, cleaner, more convenient, more adaptable, and extraordinarily resistant to disappearing. Plastic became one of the great technological successes of the modern world, which would have been an entirely happy story if we had not also decided to manufacture mountains of it, use much of it briefly, and then scatter the leftovers across nearly every environment on Earth. Microplastics are what happens when that story continues long enough. They are not mysterious alien substances, nor are they a newly invented chemical designed by a laboratory villain stroking a cat in a basement. They are pieces of plastic that are very small, generally less than five millimeters in size, and they come from a surprisingly large collection of sources. Some begin life small, such as industrial pellets or certain manufactured particles. Others start as ordinary objects and become smaller through sunlight, weathering, friction, abrasion, washing, driving, cracking, crumbling, and the steady punishment that the physical world inflicts on everything we build. A plastic bottle does not necessarily vanish when it breaks down. It may simply become a bottle that has resigned from bottle duty and taken up a new career as several thousand fragments.
