Teacher Strategies in the Implementation of Values Education: DE
Synopsis "Teacher Strategies in the Implementation of Values Education: DE"
Values are fundamental principles that guide human behavior, decisions, and social interactions. Values education, on the other hand, is a deliberate process of nurturing ethical, moral, and social values, such as integrity, respect, teamwork, responsibility, and social justice, among learners. Historically rooted in philosophical, cultural, and religious traditions and reflected in African holistic education systems, values education today incorporates experiential learning, reflection, and role modelling to address contemporary societal challenges. Globally, education systems increasingly recognize values as central to holistic learner development, integrating them into curricula, teaching practices, and school cultures to foster ethical character and responsible citizenship, as emphasized by organizations such as UNESCO, the OECD, and the Council of Europe. Despite policy support and curriculum frameworks such as Kenya's Competency-Based Education, effective implementation remains inconsistent due to fragmented integration, limited teacher preparedness, and overemphasis on academic achievement. Empirical studies across Africa and beyond reveal gaps in teacher capacity, strategy.
