Las Vegas has always been a little rigged. Kayla Diaz just never expected someone to try to reshuffle the whole damn deck. When a routine August brownout knocks out the power at Kayla's house, she's more annoyed than alarmed. Then she tries a little magic to beat the heat, and that fizzles too.Electricity failing in Vegas is inconvenient.Magic failing with it is impossible.Kayla starts digging and discovers the outage wasn't an accident. Someone has been running carefully controlled tests across the valley, temporarily suppressing both electricity and magic. Most were small enough to escape notice. Eleven minutes here. A neighborhood there. Twenty-four tests designed to answer one question: How much of supernatural Las Vegas can be switched off at once? The answer leads straight to Dominic Voss.Voss believes Vegas has been playing with a stacked deck for decades. Old magical families, casino powers, vampire organizations, and the Circle have accumulated advantages no newcomer could ever hope to match. His solution is brutally simple: shut it all down long enough to destroy the old magical infrastructure and force everyone to start over. And his final test isn't a test at all. With the Strip and Downtown in his sights, Kayla and Chen have to unravel a scheme built by specialists who don't know one another, connected only through burner phones and a man determined to reset the game. The worst part?Kayla isn't entirely sure Voss is wrong about the deck. She just knows he doesn't get to decide who burns when he reshuffles it.In Las Vegas, everybody plays the hand they're dealt. Dominic Voss intends to deal a new one.
