Al recorrer sus páginas, podremos acercarnos a los rituales que combinan lo ancestral-indígena con lo criollo-español, a sus estudios etnolingüísticos y conversaciones con músicos y folcloristas, cultores del arte popular, quienes lo reconocieron no solo como un eximio creador de historias ambientadas en los Andes sino como un agudo observador y protector de los elementos que componen la identidad de nuestro país. La labor de recopilación, transcripción, comentarios y notas ha sido realizada por Sybila Arredondo de Arguedas.

José María Arguedas (Andahuaylas, January 18, 1911-Lima, December 2, 1969) was a Peruvian writer, poet, teacher, and anthropologist. He authored novels and stories that have led him to be considered one of the great representatives of Peruvian literature. The critic Martin Seymour-Smith regards Arguedas as "the greatest novelist of our time", who wrote "some of the most powerful prose the world has ever known".
