Synopsis "Estupor y temblores (in Spanish)"

This novel, which has autobiographical inspiration and has been enormously successful in France, tells the story of a young Belgian girl who goes to Tokyo to work for a large Japanese company. But in a country so deeply hierarchical, the girl is weighed down by the burden of a double disadvantage: she is a western woman. This is enough to make sure she becomes the object of a never ending list of humiliating ordeals and of a progressively degrading workload.

Amélie Nothomb (Kobe, Japan, 1967), born as Fabienne Claire Nothomb, is an acclaimed Belgian writer in the French language and a member of the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature of Belgium. Although she comes from a renowned Brussels family, she spent her childhood and youth in Asia, where her father, a diplomat, served in countries such as China and Japan. This multicultural experience has left a deep imprint on her work, characterized by her witty style, psychological sharpness, and her ability to explore universal themes with a touch of irony and black humor. She currently resides in Paris, from where she continues to establish herself as one of the most original voices in contemporary literature

Since her first novel in 1992 with Hygiene of the Assassin, Nothomb has published more than thirty novels, earning a prominent place in the international literary scene. Her work, translated into numerous languages, has been awarded prizes such as the Leteo Cultural Award (2006) and the Grand Prix Jean Giono (2008), accolades that highlight the quality and originality of her narrative. With agile prose and boundless imagination, Nothomb continues to captivate readers around the world.
