His most notable work is the Blacksad series, started in 2000 with artist Juanjo Guarnido, which has been awarded prizes such as the National Comic Award (2014) for Amarillo, and two Eisner Awards in 2013.

In addition to Blacksad, Díaz Canales has co-written the revival of Corto Maltese with Rubén Pellejero, with titles like Under the Midnight Sun (2015) and The Line of Life (2024).
