In 1995, she was kidnapped, an experience she captured in the novel Nine Dawns and a Half. In 2004, she published Diary of Pain, where she narrates her battle against rheumatoid arthritis and advanced cancer. She passed away that same year.
Puga left a significant literary legacy, with works translated into several languages and a profound reflection on life and suffering. Her personal diaries were donated in 2016 to the University of Texas at Austin, preserving her voice and her view of the world.
