Louis Alonso Schokel

Luis Alonso Schökel (Madrid, February 15, 1920 – Salamanca, July 10, 1998) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and prominent biblical scholar. He studied classical languages at the University of Salamanca and earned his doctorate in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1957. Throughout his career, he specialized in Hebrew poetry and biblical hermeneutics, and was a professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome from 1957 until his retirement in 1995. Among his most significant works are "Studies in Hebrew Poetics" (1963), "The Bible of Our People: Pilgrim's Bible Latin America" and "The Inspired Word" (1966).
