Apolonio de Rodas
Little is known about the Greek poet Apollonius of Rhodes. Named after having lived a long time on that Greek island, he was originally from Alexandria, where he apparently was a disciple of Callimachus and came to be in charge of the Library of Alexandria in the middle of the 3rd century BC. Argonautica, his only preserved work, is an exceptional example of Greek epic, not only for its unquestionable literary quality but also for being the first Greek epic poem known after the two works of Homer and the only one known from that time. In Argonautica, the particular odyssey experienced by Jason and the crew of the Argo on their way to Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece is narrated. Jason's legendary journey, filled with numerous adventures, is one of the most famous mythological tales of antiquity, which in the hands of Apollonius of Rhodes reflects the genuine aesthetic conception of his time and becomes a mythical itinerary crafted from a rich tradition that the author knew very well.
