En estas crónicas vamos siguiendo el recorrido que hizo el escritor por balnearios, playas y ciudades del Norte. Recrea, de manera admirable, ambientes y tipos (“siluetas”) desde las resonancias sentimentales que despiertan en él. El itinerario del verano de 1904 se vio truncado en Ontaneda (Santander) cuando Azorín fue tomado por un anarquista que habría ido allí para atentar contra la vida de D. Antonio Maura, suceso que relata en “La novela de Ontaneda”. En 1905 repite y culmina el viaje, recorriendo el Norte desde Cestona (Guipúzcoa) hasta Mondariz (Pontevedra). Especial interés tienen las visitas a eminentes colegas: Galdós, Pereda, Darío, Pérez de Ayala, y la visita sentimental a la última casa en que habitó su maestro, Clarín.
