César Vallejo nació en Santiago de Chuco, Perú, el 18 de marzo de 1882 y murió en París en 1938, ciudad donde residía desde 1923. Su primer libro, Los heraldos negros, también en esta colección, data de 1918 y acusa influencias modernistas y simbolistas. Pero en rigor sólo revela su verdadera personalidad cuatro años después con la publicación de Trilce, prologado por Antenor Orrego, quien descubre en él una 'técnica renovadora y distinta, la vocalización de la palabra original, la edénica puerilidad del vocablo, una manera personal y directa con que el poeta rompe a hablar porque acaba de descubrir el verbo, la significación acendradamente americana de la obra de Vallejo es reflejo de su expresión poética original, recién nacida, del ámbito telúrico, geográfico y social de donde surge'.'

César Abraham Vallejo Mendoza (Santiago de Chuco, March 16, 1892-Paris, April 15, 1938) was a Peruvian poet and writer. He is considered one of the greatest innovators of universal poetry of the 20th century and the leading figure in Peruvian literature.

He is, in the opinion of critic Thomas Merton, «the greatest Catholic poet since Dante, and by Catholic I mean universal» and, according to Martin Seymour-Smith, «the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language».
