En Trenza de tierra, María José Arguedas sobrevuela, como «el ave que fue niña», a las mujeres de una familia trenzadas a las raíces de un territorio: el Perú. Abuelas y madres, alguna vez niñas, cuentan sus historias a través de una narradora que también ha mirado por la ventana de la casa familiar o la chacrita, pues las historias la han llevado hasta allí. La casa, vasija que da forma, que guarda tradiciones y tristezas, está tan presente como los ríos, árboles y plantas. La casa, símbolo de pertenencia, contiene la idea de hogar y cuidado, mientras reclama el regreso de las mujeres que han estado antes allí. Las plantas medicinales, los rituales bajo el árbol de pomarosa y el conflicto por la tierra invitan a pensar la relación de los personajes con su lugar Madre, porque Trenza de tierra es también una biografía familiar que nos lleva a mirar de cerca la historia propia, pues la historia familiar es una mirada de cerca a la historia de un país.

He authored novels and stories that have led him to be considered one of the great representatives of Peruvian literature. The critic Martin Seymour-Smith regards Arguedas as "the greatest novelist of our time", who wrote "some of the most powerful prose the world has ever known".
