"The Good President" by L. A. Smith takes a fresh approach to governing. All too often it is the issues which affect everyday life that get pushed to the back burner. "The Good President" offers common sense solutions to problems such as homeless veterans, clean water, global warming, and protecting the electrical grids among others. However common sense is no longer common among many elected officials. They prefer to be argumentative rather than striving for a common goal. While debate is necessary among lawmakers, it is often extremely time consuming. The proposals put forth in this book deal with issues which have been pushed aside for far too long, many times due to this waste of time. This president / vice presidential team were life long friends inspite of life leading them in separate directions for 30 years. Once reunited, it became obvious they were cut from the same cloth with similar values rooted in their childhoods. The two were high school basketball heroes who through circumstance were forced to abandon their dreams of college. One became a successful farmer while the other served in the US Military for 20 years, going on to run his own mechanics shop. Being geeks in high school along with multiple lessons from life experiences had produced an enhanced grasp of basic human needs. This pair of friends share this deeper understanding with new acquaintance, who financially and supportively catapults them to the office of the presidency. Many times American families have been forced to examine their lifestyles due to being buried in debt. They must cut extravagances out of their spending habits to make it financially, while repaying their debt. The time has come for the government to do so too. Charity begins at hoe. Reduce foreign aid by 25% and pay your bills. Financial institutions would have stopped loaning to any American citizen long before their debt ratio reached the equivalent level of our national deficit.
