Marco Polo (1254-1324) was a merchant, traveler, and Venetian writer famous for his accounts of his travels to Asia. His most famous work, The Book of the Marvels of the World (circa 1300), also known as The Travels of Marco Polo, documents his experiences at the court of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan and his explorations through China and other regions of the East. This book, dictated to Rustichello da Pisa while he was a prisoner in Genoa, belongs to the travel literature genre and was one of the first detailed descriptions of Asia in medieval Europe.

His work influenced European exploration, inspiring figures such as Christopher Columbus. The Book of the Marvels of the World became a key reference for the geography and cartography of the time, sparking Western interest in the riches of the East.
