The projected thirty-volume Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR) is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the current state of knowledge on the background, origins, and development of the canonical texts of the Bible as they were accepted in Judaism and Christianity. Unprecedented in breadth and scope, this encyclopedia also documents the history of the Bible’s interpretation and reception across the centuries, not only in Judaism and Christianity, but also in literature, visual art, music, film, and dance, as well as in Islam and other religious traditions and new religious movements.

Die Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR) gibt in umfassender Art und Weise den aktuellen Stand der Wissenschaft zu den Ursprüngen und zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der Bibel im Rahmen der unterschiedlichen Kanons im Juden- und Christentum wieder. Mehr als 4.500 Autor*innen aus über 70 Ländern dokumentieren die Geschichte der Bibelrezeption; und zwar nicht nur in den christlichen Kirchen und der jüdischen Diaspora, sondern auch im Islam, in weiteren religiösen Traditionen und in aktuellen religiösen Bewegungen, sowie in Literatur, Kunst, Musik und Film.

Mit diesem breitgefächerten Ansatz hat sich die EBR mit der Veröffentlichung der ersten Einträge 2009 auf neues Terrain begeben. Seitdem veranschaulicht die EBR, dass biblische Texte ihren jeweils eigenen entstehungsgeschichtlichen Hintergrund und Kontext haben.

Außerdem zeigt sie, wie diese Schriften rezipiert und interpretiert wurden und welchen Einfluss sie auf eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher religiöser und theologischer Zusammenhänge sowie auf Kunst und Kultur ausübten.

Die breite Rezeption und das durchweg positive Echo aus der akademischen Gemeinschaft zeigt, wie die EBR die Erforschung der Bibel und ihrer Rezeption prägt. 2010 wurde EBR mit dem CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title ausgezeichnet, EBR Online erhielt diesen bedeutenden Preis 2020 (CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title of 2020).

The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (EBR) pursues a twofold task. Firstly, it comprehensively renders the current state of knowledge on the origins and development of the Bible according to its different canonic forms in Judaism and Christianity. Secondly, it documents the history of the Bible’s reception, not only in the Christian churches and the Jewish Diaspora, but also in literature, art, music, and film, as well as Islam and other religious traditions and current religious movements.
