Osseointegration ist definiert "als eine direkte strukturelle und funktionelle Verbindung zwischen geordnetem, lebendem Knochen und der Oberfläche eines lasttragenden Implantats". Man sagt nun, dass ein Implantat als osseointegriert gilt, wenn es keine progressive Relativbewegung zwischen dem Implantat und dem Knochen gibt, mit dem es direkten Kontakt hat. In der Praxis bedeutet dies, dass es bei der Osseointegration einen Verankerungsmechanismus gibt, durch den nicht-vitale Komponenten zuverlässig und vorhersagbar in den lebenden Knochen eingebaut werden können und dass diese Verankerung unter allen normalen Belastungsbedingungen bestehen bleibt. Es handelt sich um eine direkte Knochenverankerung an einem Implantatkörper, der ein Fundament zur Abstützung von Prothesen bieten kann; er hat die Fähigkeit, okklusale Kräfte direkt auf den Knochen zu übertragen. Nach einer fünfzehnjährigen Studie mit osseointegrierten Implantaten bei der Behandlung zahnloser Kiefer wurde eine Erfolgsquote von 80-100 Prozent berichtet.
