En esta obra, Covey emplea su clarividencia habitual para  formular una nueva manera de resolver las dificultades profesionales y  personales a las que todos nos enfrentamos y dar soluciones a los grandes retos  que se plantean a las organizaciones y a la sociedad.    En todo conflicto, la   primera alternativa es “imponer mi forma de ver las cosas” y la segunda  “que la impongas tú”. Y, normalmente, el conflicto surge a la hora de decidir  cuál es la mejor “manera de ver”. Existen muchos métodos de resolución de  conflictos, si bien la mayoría de ellos implican un compromiso, una especie de  acuerdo de bajo perfil del que no surge ningún resultado nuevo y sorprendente.  La 3ª alternativa plantea cómo llegar más allá de un simple armisticio, pues su  objetivo es enseñarnos a crear una realidad distinta y mejor.    La obra va más allá de los métodos de solución de conflictos  habituales y muestra el camino hacia una tercera opción, una Tercera  Alternativa que va más allá de “mi manera de ver” y de “tu manera de ver”, y  nos enseña a plantear un horizonte más elevado, que permite que las partes en  conflicto lleguen a una solución que ni siquiera hubieran soñado plantear.

Stephen R. Covey (Salt Lake City, Utah, October 24, 1932 – Idaho Falls, July 16, 2012) was one of the most influential educators, writers, and speakers in leadership development and personal growth. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Utah, an MBA from Harvard, and a PhD in Religious Education from Brigham Young University, where he also taught. Covey was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various leadership roles within the organization. His most iconic work, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1989), revolutionized business literature by consolidating principles of proactivity, vision, prioritization, and synergy, and has sold over 25 million copies in 52 languages. He also published other influential titles such as First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The 8th Habit, and The Speed of Trust.

Recognized as one of the 25 most influential Americans by Time magazine in 1996, Covey received ten honorary doctorates and the Fatherhood Award from the National Fatherhood Initiative, among other distinctions. He founded the Covey Leadership Center in 1985, which merged with Franklin Quest in 1997 to create FranklinCovey, a global leader in consulting and training leaders and teams. Covey's legacy endures in millions of readers and organizations worldwide that have adopted his principles to achieve effectiveness and transformative leadership.
