Hilario Goicoechea inicia sus estudios universitarios en el convulso San Sebastián de fines de los años setenta. Hijo de una familia obrera, de la que le separan intereses y mutuos recelos, tímido por naturaleza, ha sido sin embargo tocado por el duende de la poesía. Por casualidad, entra a formar parte de un pintoresco cenáculo literario, La Placa, compuesto por jóvenes literatos, provocativos y arrogantes, que aspiran a encarnar todos los valores subversivos del Surrealismo y que, pese a su juventud, se mueven cómodamente en las aguas del arte y del pensamiento. Mientras fustigan el asfixiante filisteísmo cultural de su entorno, tratan de darse a conocer maquinando las invenciones más extravagantes. Con ellos, Hilario no sólo padecerá las urgencias del deseo y los celos, sino que comprenderá que nada importa tanto como una página bien escrita y que el viejo sueño de hacer arte de la vida, y vida del arte, siempre termina malparado ante la terca torpeza de la miseria cotidiana.

Fernando Aramburu (San Sebastián, 1959) is a narrator, poet, and essayist. He graduated in Hispanic Philology at the University of Zaragoza, working in magazines where he promoted culture. In 1985, he moved to Germany where he was a Spanish teacher for immigrant children in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, but he left teaching in 2009 to dedicate himself body and soul to writing.

He is the author of the short story books Los peces de la amargura (2006, XI Mario Vargas Llosa NH Award, IV Dulce Chacón Award and Royal Spanish Academy Award 2008) and El vigilante del fiordo (2011), the non-fiction works Autorretrato sin mí (2018), Vetas profundas (2019) and Utilidad de las desgracias (2020), as well as the novels Fuegos con limón (1996), Los ojos vacíos (2000, Euskadi Award), El trompetista del Utopía (2003), Bami sin sombra (2005), Viaje con Clara por Alemania (2010), Años lentos (2012, VII Tusquets Editors Novel Award and Madrid Booksellers Award), La gran Marivián (2013), Ávidas pretensiones (Biblioteca Breve Award 2014) and Patria (2016, National Narrative Award, Critics Award, Euskadi Award, Francisco Umbral Award, Dulce Chacón Award, Archbishop Juan de San Clemente Award, Strega European Award, Lampedusa Award, Athens Award...), the last great Spanish literary phenomenon, translated into 35 languages and turned into a prestigious series by Aitor Gabilondo for HBO.
