El «paroxiton» es la sílaba anterior a la última, la «penúltima». Así pues, el paroxismo es el momento anterior al último, no el del final, sino precisamente el anterior al final, justo antes de que ya no se pueda decir nada. El paroxismo, dice Baudrillard, está relacionado con los fenómenos extremos, pero no comparte la ilusión del final. Vive en la inminencia del final. La utiliza como observatorio, desde donde puede tener un panorama inexpugnable. Hace intervenir el final en el mismo desarrollo de las cosas. Incluso se sitúa eventualmente más allá, como si saltara por encima de su sombra. Ni fanático, ni proselitista, ni exorcista: justo la violencia del paroxismo y el discreto encanto de la indiferencia. Justo equilibrio entre los extremos, justo allí donde en los confines de la indiferencia sigue brillando un resplandor de desesperación. Ésta es sin duda también la figura de nuestro mundo.
