Kinney allows himself some insider humor as well, with Greg noting the racket childrens book authors have going. All you have to do is make up a character with a snappy name, and then make sure the character learns a lesson at the end of the book. Thus, while sketching what would become Diary of a Wimpy Kid, he worked as a designer at a newspaper and as a computer programmer. After six years of work, it was published on Funbrain.com. To date, the online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has over 80 million visits. In 2006, Greg's stories began to be published in book format and quickly reached the top of the sales charts. He currently works in design and develops online games and lives in Plainville (Massachusetts), with his wife, Julie, and their two children, Will and Grant. In 2009, Kinney was named by Time magazine one of the most influential people in the world.
