Born in Cochrane, Ontario, she had to move several times during her childhood due to her parents' jobs. Ellis decided to start writing when she was between 11 and 12 years old. As she grew up, her work and writing were mainly done through traveling and speaking to others who have problems and documenting the main things. She began writing her first book, The Bread of War, some time later.
