Este servidor de vosotros nació, a más de once lustros, sin que hubiera anunciado el grande acontecimiento ningún signo misterioso ni en el Cielo ni en la Tierra. Fue ello en Santo-domingo, una población encaramada en unos riscos de Antioquia. Según unos, se parece a un nido de águila; según otros, a un taburete. Opto por el asiento. En todo caso, es un pueblo de tres efes, como dicen allá mismo: feo. frío y faldudo. Mis padres eran entre pobres y acaudalados, entre labriegos y señorones y más blancos que el Rey de las Españas, al decir de mis cuatro abuelos. Todos ellos eran gentes patriarcales, muy temerosas de Dios y muy buenos vecinos.

He dedicated himself to jobs such as: tailor, secretary to a judge, storekeeper in a mine, and worker at the Ministry of Public Works.
