En antes de adán, un muchacho del siglo veinte se convierte en sus sueños nocturnos en colmillo largo, un homínido del pleistoceno que vive en una sociedad desgarrada por feroces conflictos de convivencia. En sus horas de vigilia, el muchacho pone en orden los terribles episodios de su vida primitiva para dar una coherencia cronológica a sus experiencias. A partir de aquí, London teje una sugerente teoría sobre la memoria racial. El viejo profesor de la peste escarlata es uno de los pocos supervivientes de un cataclismo ocurrido en 2013 que destruyó la civilización alcanzada hasta entonces y redujo a la humanidad a un nuevo primitivismo. En el año 2072, que es cuando ocurre la acción de la novela, el pobre intenta trasladar infructuosamente a sus nietos los conocimientos que la humanidad había poseído. Los volverá a poseer, sin duda, pero deberá empezar otra vez de cero su azaroso y larguísimo camino hacia el saber.

Jack London (1876-1916), pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, is one of the great American writers of the early 20th century. His world is inspired by a very subjective interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy and is built on the principle of survival of the fittest. Born in San Francisco, he was essentially a self-taught child who avidly read the collections of the public library. At seventeen, he embarked on his first schooner, heading to Japan. After several experiences as a sailor and vagabond -which also led to his imprisonment-, London attended Oakland High School and later, the University of California, which he had to leave due to financial problems. Like many, he suffered from gold fever until he finally turned to writing.
