El mundo de las letras celebra este año el centenario del nacimiento de John Steinbeck, Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1962, y el cincuentenario de la publicación de Al este del Edén, dos motivos más que suficientes para devolver a los lectores esta novela, una de las más conocidas de este autor, y en la que se inspiró Elia Kazan para la película del mismo título protagonizada por James Dean, que interpretó al personaje, mítico para toda una generación, de Cal Trask.   Entre la guerra de secesión y la primera guerra mundial, dos familias viven a lo largo de tres generaciones en el lejano valle de Salinas. Tras acompañar a la familia Hamilton en su épico asentamiento en California, el lector penetra en el sofocante mundo de los Trask, en el que Adam, un hombre de costumbres estrictas y severas, intenta educar en el recto camino a sus hijos Aron y Cal, tras ser abandonado por su mujer, a quien nadie en la familia se atreve a nombrar. Aron es trabajador, obediente y cumplidor. Cal, inquieto y siempre insatisfecho, no soporta el peso del silencio en torno a su madre, cuyo carácter indomable cree él ―y secretamente también Adam― que ha heredado; así pues, ya es inevitable la lucha soterrada por el reconocimiento del padre, cuyo rechazo hacia Cal conduce a éste a la más provocadora rebeldía. Un día, Cal se siente extrañamente atraído por la misteriosa Cathy Adams, que regenta el burdel más célebre de la región. A partir de ese instante, la maldición caerá sobre Cal, condenado irremisiblemente a permanecer al este de un elusivo Edén...

John Steinbeck (1902- 1968) was born in Salinas, California. He studied at Stanford University and during his youth worked as a laborer and fruit picker. His first success was Tortilla Flat (1935), a story between picaresque and romantic about Mexican immigrants settled around Monterey (California). In 1936, he wrote a series of seven reports for The San Francisco News, which he later published as The Harvest Gypsies. In 1939, his most famous work appeared: The Grapes of Wrath (Pulitzer Prize 1940), which tells the sad story of a family from the impoverished state of Oklahoma that migrates to California during the economic depression of the thirties; this work, received as a moving document of social protest, was adapted into a film by John Ford in 1940. Among his extensive literary work are also the novels Of Mice and Men (1936), The Pearl (1947) and East of Eden (1962), and screenplays for movies, such as the one he wrote for Viva Zapata! by Elia Kazan. In 1962, Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
