This textbook covers a broad range of issues in the study of English Linguistics. For this purpose, it combines theoretical framework with empirical engagement and brings together structural, generative, functional and cognitive perspectives to the study of English.Thus the textbook focuses on the mainstream English-speaking linguistic schools and traditions, which made great contribution to the study of language in general. The intriguing issue of the study of global status of English is also part of our textbook which will help students to understand the nature of the phenomenon of global language. It also adds extensive attention to the relationship between language and culture focusing on the role the study of language and linguistics can play in the education of a person, who is competent not only in English language and linguistics but also in intercultural communication and dialogue. Theoretical framework, empirical engagement and intercultural competence are therefore key issues for any person to be educated either as a linguist or a teacher of English as a foreign language or a second language.
